Alan R. Stephenson
Sep 1, 2017Stephenson, Ph.D, 86, of Garfield Heights, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017 at his home. He was an admired brother, uncle, colleague, friend, professor and mentor to so many people. He never had children, but adopted many of us as his own.Born on Dec. 12, 1930 in Ballston Spa, he was the son of the late Roger and Ethel (Tenney) Stephenson.Alan was a “Depression kid” who initially did not excel in college. He joined the military during the Korean War, serving in Japan from December 1950 to September 1954.Upon his return to the states, he dedicated himself to his education and excelled at Albany State University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and his Master of Arts in 1958, and would receive a Ph.D in communications from Ohio State University. He always gave credit to his career path from his experience in operating the lighting for Page Hall theatrical presentations, and his electronic experience he received in the United States Air Force.Alan became the Director of School Television for the State of Massachusetts for three years before returning to Ohio, where he became the original employee of WVIZ in Cleveland. He had a short stint as the executive vice president of a small cable company before becoming an associate professor (1985-2002) and professor (2002-2015) in the Tim Russert Department of Communications and Theater Arts at John Carroll University in Ohio.He had a passion for life and had many wonderful experiences. He was able to travel extensively, including more than three trips to Africa and a trip behind the “steel curtain” to report on the Holocaust. As a result, he won a regional Emmy for his documentary about the Holocaust.Alan was also the lead author of the Broadcast Announcing Work text and was instrumental in developing the North East Ohio Broadcast archives at the university. He was awarded the Lower Great Lakes Chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences President’s Award for “Outstanding Contributions Made to the Development and Advancement of Educational...
